Cordyceps entered modern sports culture in the 1990s, when a group of Chinese distance runners credited it as part of their training regime. The CS-4 strain used here is the cultivated, laboratory-characterised form of Cordyceps sinensis — the same reason it is the strain most commonly referenced in published work rather than the rare wild caterpillar fungus.
It is dual extracted so both the water-soluble polysaccharides and the alcohol-soluble constituents, including its cordycepin and adenosine fraction, are carried into the liquid. The taste is mild, slightly savoury and easy to take in water.
