Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is the lacquered, fan-shaped bracket fungus known in China as lingzhi — the 'mushroom of immortality' of classical herbal texts, and traditionally the one taken at the end of the day rather than the start.
Reishi is also the clearest case for a tincture. A large part of what people look for in reishi sits in the triterpene fraction, which is alcohol-soluble and simply is not drawn out by hot water alone; a dual extract captures both that fraction and the water-soluble beta-glucans. It is deeply bitter — that bitterness is the mushroom, not a fault.
